Last night was the opening round of the Westwood Varsity Spring League playoffs and had some very exciting action. In the opening consolation game, Brookline picked up their first win of the season with a strong performance against Walpole. In the first semi final game, Franklin dominated Westwood for a 13 point victory, while holding Westwood to under 30 points scored for the entire game. The final game of the night was a hard fought battle between Foxboro and Needham that ended in dramatic fashion with Needham hitting a go ahead 3 pointer with 3 seconds left to secure the victory. Next Monday (June 22nd), Needham will take on Franklin for the league championship at 8pm.
The Greater Boston All Stars join NESB
NESB is proud to announce that we have acquired the Greater Boston All Stars to make our program international. This addition will allow the top players in our program, the chance to travel overseas to compete against some of the best competition in the world to provide maximum exposure and a once in a lifetime opportunity.
The Greater Boston All Stars was a team formed by former professional basketball player Steve St. Martin in 2014. Steve, along with Lincoln-Sudbury Regional High School varsity boys basketball coach Michael Normant, formed a team consisting of the best sophomore and junior basketball players in the Greater Boston area. They then brought that team over to Germany in August 2014 for 10 days to compete against some of the most talented players and teams that the country has to offer.
This team helped each of its players receive more college exposure, a unique and fun experience, and greatly enhanced the on-court development of each player that translated into tremendous success for them in their following varsity season. That success of the players from that Greater Boston All Star team in the 2014-2015 varsity season included a League MVP, multiple 1st team league all star selections, and undefeated regular seasons. Playing on the team also resulted in many new opportunities to play in college for the players.
We at NESB, are extremely excited to add the Greater Boston All Star team and the amazing opportunity that it provides to our program. Along with assistance from other varsity coaches and NESB staff members, the NESB – Greater Boston All Stars will be coached internationally by coach Steve St. Martin. Prior to the start of his coaching career, St. Martin played basketball professionally in Germany, as well as in Mexico. In his second season playing in Germany, he was elected Player-Coach halfway through the season.
Along with coaching the Greater Boston All Stars, St. Martin has been the very successful head varsity boys basketball coach at Westwood High School. Through his first 5 seasons as the head coach at Westwood, the team has compiled a 71-37 record, including multiple state tournament victories and an undefeated (20-0) regular season this past year, which led to him being named the 2014-2015 Tri-Valley League coach of the year.
Although the European tour will take place in the summers, we will be working with the team throughout the fall and spring AAU seasons. For the upcoming fall 2015 AAU season, we will be entering the elite NESB teams into the best tournaments in the area. For the spring 2016 AAU season, we will also enter elite teams into the best tournaments in the area, but are projected to travel to top tournaments / camps in the northeast (and potentially other locations in the United States). If you are a player that is interested in playing for the NESB – Greater Boston All Stars and being a part of their European tour, then please send us an email at NESpartanBasketball@gmail.com.
